Inspired by a visit to Jordan, during which she shared a meal with a group of women and began reflecting on the universality of the social activity of eating together, Line Tjørnhøj initiated the eating opera AGONY – which deals with empowerment and the end of the patriarch society – in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden in Jordan.

AGONY is a performance opera with voices speaking the language of science, beauty, yearning and consolation – it is also a brand-new opera concept involving chef and food stylist Michelle Appelros, who creates a sumptuous meal to be served to the audience during the performance.

The opera has taken shape through close collaboration between Tjørnhøj and the group of women affiliated with the Royal Botanic Garden, who “may not have had a special interest in opera as such, but they have a great interest in sharing their cultural experiences”, as Tjørnhøj tells in a Seismograf interview.
