When we were asked to interpret Else Marie Pade’s music, it was not on the cards that it would be these songs that we threw ourselves into first. Some of her later electronic works – for which she is well known – might have been more obvious, but when we discovered these ‘Songs from a wall’ it became obvious that this was the right place to start.
On the surface, they may seem like some slightly naive – albeit beautiful – pop songs from the 40s, but when you dive into the context surrounding them, a door opens onto something both touching and cosmic:
All of these songs were created in captivity during World War II. Else Marie Pade and her fellow resistance women were betrayed and picked up by the Gestapo, and it was uncertain whether they would escape alive.
The songs and music became a diversion from the horror – a light in the darkness. It is music created out of necessity, and what is the strongest, most unquenchable hope that can be found? The greatest of all is love! Love as a cosmic phenomenon; what we resort to when faith and hope are put to the test; a connectedness with everything around us. We become friends with the stars and dance in the sky.
Most of these songs were written as ‘piano accompaniment with text’ and typically exist in two different versions (one of them supposedly prepared by Karen Brieg). There are therefore different harmonizations of several of the songs, and the piano part cannot always directly be translated into chord symbols. We have therefore had to make some choices around the harmonization of certain songs. We have also adapted certain keys to better suit our ‘deeper voices’ (cello, double bass and alto).
We hope you enjoy this sheet music, whether it’s for a festive occasion or for hope during difficult times.
