These arrangements (Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s Notturno and Clara Wieck Schumann’s Romanze) do not provide one definitive interpretation of each movement, but scale up the pianistic material to orchestral format in a way that leaves some space between the two historical periods of then and now. Unless new manuscripts come to light, we will not hear more orchestral music by these two composers than the little we have, and we will not know what they would do with an orchestra if they lived today. These arrangements are hopefully as full of questions as they give answers. There are the questions – for the arranger, and for conductor and musicians – of choice of tempi, how much rubato is feasible for an orchestra (compared with a solo pianist), and how much scope to leave for dynamic variation within the original markings. There is additionally the question for audiences of how to listen to the repertoire omissions of the past. The challenge of solving this in the moment, without pinning the composers’ musical visions down to just one interpretation, is one of the main points of these arrangements.
