The musicians form a circle, standing up and facing inwards, preferably without music stands. Each is equipped with an iPod (or similar device) set on ‘shuffle’.
Each iPod has a number of instructions.
“Play” – upon hearing this instruction, the musician waits for the clicktrack to count him/ her in (4 beats), then plays one of the motifs written in the part, each time alternating between two or three motifs (with the exception of the bassoon which has only one motif). The last note is held until the click-track counts him/her out (4 beats).
“Play semiquavers” – upon hearing this instruction, the musician waits for the click-track to count him/her in, then plays the semiquaver-version of motif, as shown in the ossia- staff. The musician plays until the click-track counts him/her out.
“Don’t play” – upon hearing this instruction, the musician stands still without playing, as in a general pause and waits for his/her next instruction.
The piece is over when the playlist in the iPod is over, and there are no further instructions.
