Ole Schmidt’s fantastic orchestral score for Carl Th. Dreyers avantgarde silent movie classic of 1927. The score and orchestral materials were thoroughly edited (with help from the German conductor and expert on silent movie scores Frank Strobel) for republication in 2011; an operation made possible with substantial financial support from the Beckett Foundation and the VELUX Foundation. The new material is fitted to the uncensored, first version of the movie, which had been lost for many years and of which a copy was almost miraculously rediscovered in 1981 in a psychiatric hospital in Oslo (Norway). The film is distributed worldwide by Gaumont (except Denmark) and in Denmark by The Danish Film Institute.
