Divine semen and female sexuality

Virgin Mary as surrogate mother inseminated by the archangel Gabriel. This is the set-up in Line Tjørnhøj’s new work Materia, which plays a central role in soprano Stine Elbæk Rysgaard’s début concerts on October 12 and 16. The 20 minutes long mini drama Materia for three sopranos and live electronics is based on texts dating more than a millenium back in history but also thoughts from the everyday life of a modern surrogate mother. It’s all about the schism caused by female sexuality confronting virgin birth from insemination by divine seemen.

Line Tjørnhøj is widely acknowledged for her dramatic works in the cross field between opera, performance, theatre and sound art poetry. Among her works in the genre we have titles as Split, Anorexia Sacra and Stabat Mater.
