Mark your calendars now and experience Don Giovanni's Inferno, which will premiere at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg in September 2023 and subsequently at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in April 2024.
Based on the final scene from Mozart's Don Giovanni, Simon Steen-Andersen playfully queries the destiny of Don Giovanni after the fateful dinner with the murdered commander, where Don Giovanni is engulfed by the flames of hell. In Steen-Andersen's musical collage, Don Juan meets other doomed characters who have escaped from works by, among others, Puccini, Wagner, Verdi, Berlioz, Gounod and Monteverdi and who are now punished with poetic justice in operatic hell.
Expect an evening of twisted classics, operatic meta, broken clichés, cinematic post-apocalypse, infernal misfits, up-side-down arias, gender-bending, waterboarding, musical punishment, hampered singing, resonating stage elements, mechanical contraptions, grinding stage mechanics, light and smoke.
