In the summer of 1871, a group of Danish composers and music lovers got together at the country house of the Danish composer Peter Heise to discuss the idea of establishing a publishing house dedicated to Danish music. Later that year, the idea was turned into reality: Samfundet til udgivelse af dansk musik (The Society for the Publication of Danish Music) was founded.
The original articles of the society stated that it should “benefit Danish music by way of financing or supporting the publication of significant musical works, old as well as new. In particular, such that would otherwise struggle to be published.”
Today, 150 years later, the publishing house – now under the name Edition·S – has published works by more than 250 composers. It is still primarily “the composers’ publishing house” and serves as a catalyst in the production of works that exist on terms that are not necessarily commercial.
Throughout 2021 we will celebrate the anniversary of Edition·S and the diverse range of music that it proudly represents.
Book Release and Ongoing Celebration
To mark the anniversary Edition·S will publish a book that sheds light on some of the subjects and stories that have defined 150 years of Danish music history. Søren Schauser, author and lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, is the editor of the book that contains contributions from seven Danish writers and musicologists. The book will be published in August and we look forward to sharing it with you.
In 2021 we are also looking forward to the launch of our new website. This will provide a big update to the possibilities we have when presenting our composers and their works, greatly improve the catalogue search function, and add new features to the webshop.
Edition·S is planning various manifestations throughout the year that bring focus to the magnitude of a century-and-a-half of published music. During the month of February Edition·S will present a digital concert series with a daily concert experience from our media archives brought straight to the screen in your living room.
