Ejnar Kanding: LEGENDE at SV Festival

Ejnar Kanding's work LEGENDE is performed on June 2 by Contemporánea featuring the composer himself on live electronics and piano.

"For this rare occasion, I will not only perform the live electronics, but also appear as pianist with my nearly 30-year-old ensemble Contemporánea, which Fritz and I founded in 1997." Ejnar Kanding explains.  The ensemble for this evening consists of:

• Ida Nørholm, cello
• Fritz Gerhard Berthelsen, clarinet and bass clarinet
• Matias Seibæk, percussion
• Ejnar Kanding, digital piano & live electronics (Max/MSP)

LEGENDE is inspired by Danish poet Ib Michael's poem Legende, and has been performed twice already, where Ib Michael’s voice was part of the performance through a recording of his reading of the poem between the music’s 13 movements, reflecting the poem’s 13 chapters.

"As the spoken narration would not make sense in the upcoming digital release of the work, which we are currently recording, I felt inspired to present this new version in which Ib Michael’s poem is present only immanently, as a narrative underlying the music," Ejnar Kanding explains. "The poem itself will not be heard recited, but fragments of it will appear in the programme notes — just enough to suggest the narrative, though without offering the pleasure of the complete text, which I warmly recommend reading."

What is lost in the poem’s complete wording is replaced by the uninterrupted flow of the music, creating a different, yet still powerful, experience.
