Ny Musik i Birkerød sets the stage for a portrait concert featuring a selection of works by Ejnar Kanding, celebrating the composers 60 years birthday earlier this year: Guldalderstykker (2019) Ciudad de las sombras (1999-2000) and LEGENDE - hommage à Ib Michael (2023)
Ejnar Kanding tells about the works:
"My “Golden Age Pieces” (Guldalderstykker) were commissioned by the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst). The task was to compose movements inspired by the paintings in the Golden Age exhibition, which I was allowed to select myself. The music consists of three main movements, each taking a woman’s portrait as its theme, and two shorter intermezzi, both based on Elisabeth Jerichau’s “The Mermaid.”
“Ciudad de las sombras” (City of Shadows) was commissioned by and dedicated to my friend and colleague Fritz Gerhard Berthelsen, who has performed the piece many times, for example in Beijing, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Germany, France, and Switzerland.
“LEGEND” (LEGENDE) is an homage to Ib Michael, whose fantastic novels I have enjoyed reading for many years. The 13-chapter-long poem is from the poetry collection: “The Wind in the Metro” (Vinden i metroen) (1990, Gyldendal). The work was commissioned by Inger Lund Molich."
"Then they disappeared over the bridge, arm in arm.
No one ever learned who they were. The Carnival is there
to protect the faces of the lovers from those still alive,
said Harlequin in the metro
and his green eyes sought mine
– as if from the bottom of a mirror.”
- Ib Michael, from chapter 13 of Legend, The Wind in the Metro, 1990
