“The piece is based on the idea of the invisible instrument — an instrument the performer imagines playing, but which is neither visible nor audible to the audience. The audience therefore only experiences a kind of by-product of the piece, while only the performer will experience the actual work,” the composer explains.
Fantasmagori (Præludium) was commissioned for Joss Smith by MINU - Festival for expanded Music - a Copenhagen-based festival presenting art on the borders of experimental music and other media. The festival seeks to expand the definition of music through presenting the unmusical as musical. It is a space for oscillating between extremes and charting relationships between art, technology, and contemporary culture.
