Line Tjørnhøj receives lifelong honorary grant

Line Tjørnhøj receives the lifelong honorary grant from the Danish Arts Foundation.

The honorary grants are awarded by the Danish Arts Foundation to celebrate the Danish artists who create art of outstanding quality.

The Danish Arts Foundation has awarded the grant based on the following motivation:

"Line Tjørnhøj is one of the most significant figures among Danish composers. While she is particularly known for her tireless efforts to expand and redefine what music is and can be, she is never afraid to delve into the simple and fundamental elements of music.

Her music often takes its starting point in the voice, one of the core elements of the human sonic world. With its direct connection to our inner universe, the voice offers an immediate, emotional link to the listener. The result is raw and deeply moving. Tjørnhøj’s musical world is often built on a conceptual foundation, rooted in ideals, where text plays a crucial role.

Works such as enTmenschT, her collaboration with the Danish National Girls’ Choir, and the heart-wrenching piece on honour killings, Daughter, bear witness to how Line Tjørnhøj uses her music as a vehicle to communicate far beyond the sonic realm. Her music is a deeply engaging, all-encompassing experience. It often emerges through close dialogue with the performing musicians, where collaboration, the creative process, and her focus on diversity and broader contexts come together in a powerful synthesis.

Line has also made a significant contribution to music through her organisational work, including with the Danish Composers’ Society, the Danish Artists Council, and Aarhus Unge Tonekunstnere."
