Traces of Else Marie Pade A Conversation on Women Artists in Experimental Electronic Music

On occasion of the exhibition Partitur at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, this conversation digs into groundbreaking artistic practices that expanded the possibilities of electronic music across generations and cultural contexts.

With Katja Heldt (Lund University) and Kamila Metwaly (MaerzMusik), moderated by Sofie Krogh Christensen (KW).

From early experiments with sound technology to contemporary electronic practices, women composers have played a crucial yet often overlooked role in shaping electronic music. This talk highlights the contributions of seminal figures, tracing histories of artistic exploration, innovation, and resistance.

Taking Else Marie Pade’s work as a point of departure, musicology scholar Katja Heldt and curator and musician Kamila Metwaly discuss groundbreaking artistic practices that expanded the possibilities of electronic music across generations and cultural contexts. Through selected pieces and critical perspectives, the conversation highlights how women artists challenged dominant narratives and, despite numerous obstacles, forged new sonic languages.

Aiming to rethink established histories of electronic music, the talk engages with the legacies and continuing impact of women artists working with sound, technology, and performance.
