On April 20, 2012 the prestigious Ensemble Modern premieres the second of two major works for sinfonietta composed by the Icelandic-born Steingrimur Rohloff.
Ensemble Modern Akademie commissioned Steingrimur’s Colonies for their 10th anniversary in collaboration with the national German radio Deutschland Rundfunk. The work will be premiered Saturday April 20 at 8 pm at DLF-Forum neuer Musik.
Ensemble Modern was founded in 1980 and has been situated in Frankfurt am Main since 1985. The ensemble is one of the world’s leading ensembles of Contemporary Music and currently consists of 19 soloists from Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Poland, and Switzerland, all of whom provide the ensemble with its rich cultural background.
The ensemble is famous for its special working and organisational form, which is unlike any other in the world. All the members are responsible for jointly selecting and dealing with projects, co-productions and financial matters. Its distinctive programme consists of music theatre, dance and video projects, chamber music, ensemble and orchestral concerts.
Each year Ensemble Modern Akadamie gives out a grant for young musicians, composers and conductors – Steingrimur Rohloff was the receiver of this in 2005.
