Fem operafragmenter (Five Opera Fragments) is a concert suite made of excerpts from Tage Nielsen’s opera Latter i Mørket (Laughter in the Dark) which is based on Vladimir Nabokov’s aponymous novel and composed between 1986 and 1991.
The opera, which takes place in Berlin in the 20s, was first performed by the Danish National Opera in Aarhus in 1995 and was later performed by Berliner Kammeroper in Berlin and at Innsbruck and Copenhagen in 1996 and 1997. The fragments reflect five completely different situations in the plot; a fact which partly explains the considerable stylistic span in the music: from cool modernism via Neoclassicism (with Scarlatti lurking in the background) and cabaret to the closing passacaglia Albinus’ død (the Death of Albinus), which forms the final and tragic climax of this crime of passion.
