Seemingly, these four preludes are of an improvised or even casual nature. The fact is, however, that here we are dealing with four rather controlled structures. This especially applies to the third prelude, which is in the form of a regular ”chaconne”. The title, which is a quote from T. S. Eliot’s ”The Waste Land”, was chosen as a poetic expression of the emotional curve that is reflected in the work: from a certain tense anxiety in the first three preludes to the peaceful ease that characterizes the last one. ”The Frosty Silence in the Gardens” was composed in 1990 and is dedicated to Erling Møldrup, who in the same year performed the work for the first time at a concert at the Ebeltoft Festival in Jutland.
