Poul Schierbeck (1888-1949) stands as one of the most important Danish composers of the 19th century. He mastered both simple melodies and large complex
compositions with technical finesse. Songs with piano make up the largest and most important part of Schierbeck's body of work. They demonstrate an amazing melodic skill and still hold an important place in Danish cultural heritage today.
For the album Selected Songs, soprano Dénise Beck has put together a broad selection of songs. Both lyrics and music show a wide range of expressions and moods, but they all all testify to Schierbeck's outstanding ability to interpret texts in music.
Schierbeck's songs written after 1924 are composed based on the principles of Carl Nielsen and Thomas Laub, that is singable melodies with small intervals and uniform note values. Almost all the songs are strophic and you can hear the focus of the time on simple and tonal songs with pleasant melodies.
The album is released by Dacapo Records.
