J.P.E. Hartmann’s Variations for Piano, Violin and Violoncello is his only work in this genre. The work consists of a number of variations on a short theme, clearly meant for amateurs and without making too high demands on the musicians. The work was written in the late 1840s, one of the very productive periods of the composer; it is not known whether Hartmann had any specific occasion in mind. Till now, the Trio has only been known from Hartmann’s fair copy, which is kept in The Royal Library.
Hartmann's Theme with Variations are published by the Danish Centre for Music Publication of the Royal Library in cooperation with Edition·S – music¬sound¬art.
