In the recent years, FIGURA established itself as a central and vital ensemble for drama and contemporary music on the Danish music scene.

    This weekend the big Rued Langgaard Festival 2011 takes place in the medieval town of Ribe and focuses on the musical and spiritual fellowship between the composer and piano virtuoso Franz Liszt and Rued Langgaard. This year’s festival celebrates Liszt’s 200-year anniversary by offering his music in interaction with Langgaard’s and even though they lived in different centuries, Liszt and Langgaard were brothers in spirit and each in their own way, demonstrated how music can be a magical medium and a source of spiritual experiences.

    The opening concert LYD // LYS at this year's STRØM Festival is going to be quite different from anything else you have ever seen. With help from composers Jacob Eriksen and Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen and light designer Jakob Kvist Hansen, a three-storied building will be changed into one big playground for twenty-four musicians. Here the facades will come to life as the electronic beat and classical Steve Reich-inspired notes pour out of every crack and window and fill the streets with tight and powerful tones.

    Iceland is preparing for Nordic Music Days in October, and we are proud to announce the Edition S composers in the concert line up. On October 7 Østen Mikal Ore’s Velodrome will be performed by 60 children from Icelandig Music Schools. Later same evening an electro acoustic concert features Cosmic Ambient by Jexper Holmen.

    Simon Steen-Andersen's new piece for harp, playback and video is premiered by Sunniva Rødland Wettre at the Tom Lee Recital Hall in Vancouver on Tuesday July 26th as a part of the 11th World Harp Congress. The new work exploits extreme amplification and real-time video projection as means of expanding the audio-visual experience, as do an increasing number of works by the 34-years old Danish composer.

    John Tchicai is a living legend. He was a leading exponent of the jazz avant-garde in New York in the '60s and a father-figure for the European avant-garde after that. He played and recorded with John Coltrane, Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, John Lennon/Yoko Ono, Albert Ayler, Dollar Brand, Carla and Paul Bley, Lee Konitz and Cecil Taylor just to name a few. By a single- mindedness of purpose and action, his work still reflects what he has always been doing, which is innovate and inspire other people, in a most refreshing way.

    The Howard Assembly Room hosted a very special event on Thursday June 9, with a screening of Carl Theodore Dreyer’s 1928 film The Passion of Joan of Arc, accompanied live by a 27 piece ensemble from the Orchestra of Opera North. A classic of the silent era, the film, starring Renee Falconetti as Joan, is widely held as one of the greatest films ever made.

    An open source artistic cooperation between Danish composer Simon Christensen and American filmmaker Bill Morrison is heading for world premiere June 16 at The Royal Danish Playhouse. The work is called ‘TRIBUTES - Pulse‘ and you can follow the creation on Seismograf.org.TRIBUTES - Pulse is a remix of art film, music and sound production. The title refers to the work as a tribute to the four american composers Charles Ives, Conlon Nancarrow, Steve Reich and Trent Reznor.
