World premiere of Jesper Koch’s Cello Concerto

A brand new cello concerto composed by Jesper Koch is world premiered on Thursday November 3 in the Concert Hall at Alsion, the Southern Jutish culture centre in Sønderborg.The new cello concerto is dedicated to solo cellist Michaela Fukacová, Southern Jutland Symphony Orchestra and its Chief conductor David Porcelijn who will be premiering the work in company with Schubert’s famous Ninth Symphony, the Great, and Ravel’s Pavane.

Li-Ying Wu made composer-in-residence at Århus Sinfonietta

The Danish Arts Agency has just announced that they have made an agreement with Århus Sinfonietta making composer Li-Ying Wu their composer-in-residence in the period January 2012 to December 2013.Li-Ying Wu will collaborate with Århus Sinfonietta on three new works: a doubble concert for Sheng (traditional Chinese wind instrument) and accordion, a song cycle for mezzo soprano and sinfonietta, and a chamber music work with electronics.

Two composers receive huge prize of honour

The two composers Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen and Finn Savery are together with The Danish String Quartet awarded the biggest Danish music prize, the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen’s Award. The three award winners receive 600.000 Dkr. each.This huge prize of honour will be celebrated with a concert on November 1 in The Queens Hall in the Royal Library’s “Black Diamond”.

Steingrimur Rohloff at Wien Modern

From October 28 to November 25 the festival Wien Modern will make Vienna a centre for contemporary music. On the third festival day October 30 Edition·S composer Steingrimur Rohloff’s new piece Druck for bassoon, saxophone and live electronics is on the programme in a concert at Alte Schmiede, which is one of Vienna’s most versatile venues for contemporary art events. Rohloff has written his piece Druck in 2010 and it will be performed by Johannes Schwarz (bsn) and Sascha Armbruster (sax).

London Sinfonietta unveils brutal Marula by Jexper Holmen

“Extremely heavily” with a “brutally sustained character” - “as if the carved blocks were relentlessly paced forward by a stream of lava”. Yes, indeed, Jexper Holmen now unveils the fruit of his first year in collaboration with London Sinfonietta. It’s named Marula, is composed for clarinet, string trio and analogue ring modulator, and this baby will be world premiered next Thursday on October 20 at Kings Place in London. Be there and beware for Marula.

Virgin Mary as surrogate mother inseminated by the archangel Gabriel. This is the set-up in Line Tjørnhøj’s new work Materia, which plays a central role in soprano Stine Elbæk Rysgaard’s début concerts on October 12 and 16. The 20 minutes long mini drama Materia for three sopranos and live electronics is based on texts dating more than a millenium back in history but also thoughts from the everyday life of a modern surrogate mother.

Rank Ensemble performs Simon Steen-Andersen in Helsinki

On October 4 Rank Ensemble will perform works by Simon Steen-Andersen at the Helsinki Music Centre, Musiikkitalo.The Finnish ensemble, Rank Ensemble, has taken as its mandate to explore the grey area of contemporary music, which lies between improvisation and composition, seeking out contexts, which range from free improvisation, to contemporary works, which involve elements of improvisation, or which grant otherwise expanded roles to the performers. Simon Steen-Andersen’s music fits perfectly into that.

Turning point in Iceland

Iceland is hosting the Nordic Music Days 2011 in its capital city Reykjavik on October 6-9. As always the annual festival has challenged the Nordic composers with a specific subject, and this time it is A Turning Point.Opening on the three years ‘anniversary’ day for the Icelandic financial collapse, the Nordic Music Days nevertheless wants to celebrate this day as a new beginning for a rise in culture and art by gathering the most outstanding contemporary art music from the five Nordic countries and playing it in the newly built concert house Harpa in Reykjavik.

Every year P2 organises an award event to celebrate the best CDs of Danish composers and practitioners. This year it is up to the P2 listeners to choose the four winners, who will be celebrated at a gala concert in the DR Concert Hall September 30 at 7.30 pm.Simon Steen-Andersen is one of the nominees and will be competing to get a P2 ”Listen to New” award 2011 with his album “Pretty Sound” performed by Norwegian Ensemble Asamisamasa and released by Dacapo Records.

Ilja Bergh performs at Møstings hus
